Cape Town - A case of assault has been opened against controversial ANC member of the provincial legislature Andile Lili.

Lili, 47, is expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. He was arrested a week ago by officers attached to the Harare police station in Khayelitsha.

According to police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi, circumstances around the case were still under investigation.

According to Lili, the complaint against him stems from an incident that had already been dealt with but claimed that his arrest was part of a conspiracy by those who were trying to “sabotage” him.

“This case of assault is something that happened a long time ago. A case was opened because I allegedly assaulted a certain lady.

“It is a strategy that is used against me so that I don’t get to be elected as an IPC delegate for the annual conference,” said Lili.

The complaint against Lili follows after several cases had been lodged against him in the past. He was recently convicted of inciting members of Ses’khona.

His conviction follows this address during a protest in July 2015, for which he later apologised: “We must kill them comrades. We are liberating ourselves from criminals. Police are trying but the justice system is failing us.”

He said: “Yes, I am sorry, because I said those things out of frustration.”
