Cape Town - Proceedings against alleged Metrorail arsonist Thobela Xoseni cannot commence until his assessment report from Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital is submitted.

Xoseni, 30, appeared briefly in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. The matter has been postponed to August 1.

Xoseni has been accused of torching two trains at Cape Town station in April. He faces charges of unlawfully and intentionally damaging essential infrastructure to the amount of R33million.

Xoseni said in his first court appearance that he “burnt the trains”, but

the magistrate ruled that he be referred to Valkenberg to assess his mental state. He had been arrested after he was captured on CCTV camera leaving a carriage of one of the trains that had been set alight.

Hendry van Heerden, a protection official employed by Prasa, said in a statement that he had been told by his manager that he spotted Xoseni and had pursued him.
