Cape Town - While thousands of Capetonians headed to this beach at the month-end weekend, although some complained about the heat, the SA Weather Service (SAWS) says any talk of a heatwave is merely conjecture.

For the past few days, Cape Town’s temperatures have been hovering around 30°C but weather “know-it-alls” say this does not make it a heatwave.

SAWS meteorologist Wayne Benter says: “Currently, we are not in a heatwave. None of the temps has reached the threshold (32°C). It needs to be above 32°C for three consecutive days for it to be considered a heatwave.”

He said Cape Town’s hot weather was not unusual and was typical for this time of year. Venter said what made it worse was a dry interior wind last week.

Those who have been complaining about temperatures will get some relief as soon as today.

“Temperatures are expected to drop from Tuesday, from 30°C to 26°C. The South Western interior will drop from 36°C to 30°C on Tuesday,” said Venter.
