Cape Town - A MyCiTi bus at the Omuramba station in Milnerton, Cape Town, was set alight on in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Spokesperson for the City's safety and security directorate, Richard Bosman, said the incident took place at around 05:30, on Racecourse road between Koeberg Road and Omuramba. The bus was empty at the time and there were no injuries.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said it was not clear who was behind the fire.

“There was no apparent witnesses but that did not hinder the fire department from extinguishing the fire. It's becoming increasingly hard to identify who is behind this because we are not aware of any protests anywhere,” Smith said.

The workers of the MyCiTi bus service downed tools in October and embarked on a wildcat strike for several days. They have called on former Mayco member for Transport and Urban Development Brett Herron to address them on their demands on a number of occasions.

The City was granted a court order against the MyCiTi bus drivers participating in the strike that has resulted in severe disruptions of the service.
