Cape Town - Police arrested four suspects whom they believe were on their way to rob a business in Parow.

The suspects, who were armed with illegal firearms loaded with ammunition, were apprehended on the R300, after they attempted to make a run for it when they spotted the police.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut said the suspects were apprehended by police on the R300 after they attempted to evade capture when their plans were foiled.

“Lockdown II police arrested four suspects for the possession of an unlicensed 7.65 pistol, 59 rounds of ammunition and an imitation firearm yesterday after an armed robbery was foiled.

“Officers received a tip-off that suspects in a white VW Polo were planning to perpetrate a business robbery in Parow, and monitored the area. The suspects fled when they spotted police presence, but were apprehended on the R300.”

In a separate incident, police arrested a 26-year-old man for the possession of an illegal firearm and rounds of ammunition in Kensington. At a separate residence in the area, police recovered yet another illegal firearm, which was tucked away in a yard.

The discovery was made by members of the Flying Squad who were reacting to information they had received. In a statement, police said the information resulted in the discovery of a .45 revolver, which was confiscated by officers who were on the scene. The suspect was still being sought.

A similar incident occurred in Nyanga when a suspect managed to evade arrest as he was being pursued by police. The suspect, who is still being sought by police, dropped his firearm during the chase and managed to get away.

In Khayelitsha, police patrolling in Jikela Street in Site B arrested two suspects aged 19 and 20 for the possession of two 9mm pistols and 62 rounds of ammunition.

In Kraaifontein, Lockdown II officers apprehended a 41-year-old foreign national for the possession of non-ferrous metals.

Traut said: “Police were reacting to information received when they descended at the residence of a Congolese citizen’s house in Wallacedene. Upon their arrival, police found and confiscated 60kg of suspected stolen copper cable, scales and grinders. The suspect, who owns a scrapyard, was arrested for the possession of non-ferrous metals.”
