Cape Town - With days before its elective conference, the Western Cape ANC and interim provincial committee (IPC) is divided on whether to convene its elective conference before the party’s national conference or to hold it next year.

IPC member and provincial senior leader Andile Lili said some members of the committee wanted the conference next year, while others were pushing for it to be held next week.

Late last month, ANC Western Cape spokesperson Sifiso Mtsweni said the conference would be held in Cape Town from November 30 to December 3.

Speaking to the Cape Argus yesterday, Lili said the IPC last sat a meeting in October. He said those pushing for the provincial conference to be convened next year “are comfortable”.

“Not all of us want the conference to sit (at month’s end). You can see there is no way we can go to the conference at the end of the month if we are not having meetings,” he said.

Lili said it was unlikely the conference would sit without them.

The Cape Argus recently reported that the national ANCYL had gone to Luthuli House to beg for R21 million to hold its event. Lili said they had not discussed approaching Luthuli House to ask for money to hold their conference.

At the time of writing, Mtsweni had not responded to queries about the possibility of the conference being postponed to next year.
