Three railway carriages go up in flames in Philippi

Cape Town - Yet another Metrorail train has been set alight at Leonard Radu Road, Philippi. This is the fourth train to go up in flames in less than a month.

"At about 19:20 on the 24th June 2018 City Fire and Rescue Services responded Radu Road in Philippi where we had three railway carriages were alight," said City Fire and Rescue spokesperson, Theo Layne.

"Firefighting crews were initially prevented from extinguishing the fire but eventually managed to so with the help of the Police Service. No injuries were reported and the probable cause of the fire was determined to be protest-related. 

"2 Fire Engines, 2 Water Tankers and 1 Rescue Vehicle with 16 Firefighters were dispatched to the incident, and the fire was extinguished 21:53."

Previously, Muizenberg SAPS on Friday were looking for anybody with any information that could possibly assist in the investigation of train carriages that were set alight on Monday 18 June 2018 at Steenberg railway station at approximately 14:45.

A case of malicious damage to property had been registered at Muizenberg SAPS and anybody with any information is asked to please contact the investigating officer, Detective Constable Bernita Campher on 021 787 9000/14/15 or 079 894 1300.
