Cape Town - A hidden camera in a small business that sells upmarket bicycles, spares and sundries in Long Street, Cape Town, has captured dramatic footage of the store being looted.

Rook Cycles was looted after the festive lights switch-on in Cape Town's CBD on Sunday night.

Owner Luke Godfrey said the shop would be closed until further notice.

"We’re dealing with the aftermath. Obviously, we’re gutted.

"We are so optimistic about South Africa. We’ve had opportunities to open elsewhere, but we’ve always stayed firm that this is where we need to be."

In the video, suspects can be seen smashing in the shop's display window, entering the premises, and then escaping with whatever they could grab.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said a case of business break-in was under investigation.

"Cape Town Central Police Crime Prevention Unit members responded swiftly after receiving a complaint and seven people aged between 14 and 24 years old were taken to the police station," she said.

The police recovered six bicycles.

"The suspects detained remain in custody until their first court appearance at Cape Town Magistrate Court," Rwexana said.
