It is now more than a year since I have been able to swim at the Long Street Baths.

The Cape Town authorities seem unaware of the large numbers of the public, including hundreds of schoolchildren and the band of geriatrics, who used this marvellous facility for exercise and a place to learn to swim.

Private gyms in the city opened for members several weeks ago. Yet there is no indication of when, or if, the Long Street Baths will be opening again.

Have we seen the last of this grand old lady who has served Cape Town's public for almost a century?
