Full anthem to be sung after Confed uproar

Fifa and the SA Football Association have succumbed to pressure over a Fifa rule that resulted in Die Stem being cut from the national anthem at Sunday's opening Confederations Cup game in Johannesburg.

Now the two football bodies have promised that South Africa's anthem will be heard in full when Bafana Bafana play New Zealand at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Wednesday night.

The full anthem has also been fully endorsed by the ANC, with secretary-general Gwede Mantashe saying on Wednesday that the full anthem was sung at June 16 celebrations on Tuesday.

The outrage erupted after Sunday's opener between Bafana Bafana and Iraq as Fifa and Safa were slated for cutting the Afrikaans part of the anthem.

It later emerged that the decision had not been politically motivated, as suspected by many, but in adherence to a "90-second rule" imposed by Fifa.

Jan Bosman, head of the Afrikanerbond, described it as "a short-sighted decision and in all probability based on monetary considerations".

"Fifa's insistence on a national anthem of 90 seconds is a demonstration of no respect or appreciation for South Africa as the host country, our political history and is perceived as a slap in the face of the different language communities in South Africa which are reflected in the national anthem.

"The fact that South Africa's local organising committee complied with this ill-considered instruction is a demonstration of disrespect towards our national symbols," he said.

In response, the organisers' media office reassured Bosman that the omission would be fixed before tonight's match.

It said said Bosman should "rest assured Fifa does respect each host nation".

"Fifa at no stage would interfere into the provision of the anthem as this is a responsibility by the respective football association."
