Manchester - India's Krishnan Madasamy has been disqualified from the weightlifting competition at the Commonwealth Games after failing a drugs test and has been stripped of three silver medals, officials said on Saturday.

The weightlifter, who won the medals in the 62 kg category, tested positive for a metabolite of the banned steroid nandrolone, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said in a statement.

He is the first competitor to be disqualified from the Games for a drug offence.

"Krishnan Madasamy has been disqualified as a result of a positive drug test," the CGF said in a statement. "The athlete tested positive for 19-norandrosterone, which is a metabolite of nandrolone."

The Indian lifter won the silver medals in the clean and jerk, snatch and overall events in the 62 kg category.

Kim Collins, the winner of the men's 100 metres last Saturday, tested positive for a banned substance during the Games but was allowed to keep his gold medal because he proved that he took the substance to treat an asthma condition.
