Cape Town club Santos clinched their first-ever Premier Soccer League title on Wednesday without kicking a ball after the only team that could overhaul them were held to a goalless draw.

Jomo Cosmos's 0-0 draw with AmaZulu in Johannesburg handed Santos the title, two hours before the Capetonians were due to kick off their penultimate league match of the season against Bush Bucks in Umtata.

A second successive goalless draw for Cosmos ended their slim mathematical hopes of catching Santos, who have a 10-point lead over second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.

Santos's title marks the third championship win for coach Gordon Igesund in the last five years - all of them achieved with different clubs.

Igesund won the championship with Manning Rangers in 1997 and with Orlando Pirates last season.
