Cape Town - Five sailing teams have been battling it out between Saldanha Bay and Mykonos in Langebaan in the annual Lipton Cup Challenge, which concludes on Saturday.
This week the teams had to deal with fluctuating winds but relatively calm seas, with the team aboard the yacht Nitro, representing the Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club (WYAC), seeking to defend their title.
On Wednesday, after the sea remained calm for most of the day, the crew from Nitro, aided by the “flat water“, came out tops after leading from start to finish.
During Thursday’s round the WYAC was again setting the pace, followed closely by the Royal Natal Yacht Club (RNYC).
At the end of the day’s sailing it was the crew from the RNYC, aboard Orion DYP, that crossed the line first, followed in second place by the WYAC team aboard Nitro, six boat lengths behind.
Battling for third and fourth place were the crew from the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) aboard Vulcan and the crew from the Aeolians Club sailing on Nemesis. Eventually the Aeolians Club took third place and the RCYC came in fourth.
The placings have set up what promises to be a tantalising end to the competition on Saturday.
The Zeekoei Vlei Yacht Club crew, sailing aboard CuAl6, had to isolate for several day due to a Covid-19 outbreak but were back in the water yesterday.
