Mnguni to join Heric at Maritzburg?

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Bennet Mnguni could be the first player to follow Serbian coach Vladislav Heric to Maritzburg, but Khabo Zondo is fighting his sidelining by Golden Arrows' management.

Along with making an announcement on Thursday that 41-year-old Heric was set to replace the suddenly-departed Steve Komphela, Maritzburg United chairperson Farouk Kadodia disclosed they were chasing the signatures of Mnguni from Sundowns and fellow midfielder Cavann Sibeko of Orlando Pirates.

He said negotiations with Sundowns for a loan deal were at an advanced stage, but Mnguni was being "distracted" by a rival offer from a former club in Russia.

Mnguni and Sibeko came into the picture not long after Maritzburg had failed in their bid to get Neil Winstanley from Sundowns and Ashley Opperman from Moroka Swallows.

"Our basic understanding is that if Mnguni does not go back to Russia, he will come to us," said Kadodia. "We are also trying to get Pirates to release Sibeko."

He added that Heric, formerly of First Division sides OR Tambo Cosmos and City Pillars, would be in charge of the "Team of Choice" until the end of the season, at least.

His obvious task was to try to take the side as far away from their current position at the bottom of the Castle Premiership standings as possible.

David Vilakazi would be staying on as an assistant to Heric despite the fact that Komphela, who had recommended his appointment, returned to coach the SA Under-23 team on Monday after spending about a week with Maritzburg as a replacement to unsuccessful coach Kosta Papic.

In Durban, Zondo refused to comment on the fact that he has been replaced by assistant coach Manqoba Mngqithi on a caretaker basis owing to the poor results that had Arrows sitting in the relegation zone before Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Premier United in Tembisa.

But the ambitious former builder briefly said he's "still in Durban and not planning to leave".

That sounds like a potential case for the CCMA, but Arrows' management have kept mum since Mngqithi was asked by them to lead the team in the wake of last Saturday's 3-1 loss to Silver Stars at Chatsworth, which was Arrows' ninth defeat of the season.

Like Maritzburg, Arrows are not in action this weekend.

AmaZulu, meanwhile, have a full side to face old tormentors Sundowns in Saturday's only league clash at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.

With the club still celebrating their rare victory over Ajax Cape Town in KwaMashu on Wednesday, coach Reggie Shelembe and technical director Ted Dumitru are not expected to make major changes.

Sundowns are also at full strength but pressed to get their league campaign back on track after picking up just one point from their last two matches, according to general manager Afzal Khan.

Sunday's televised match will feature Orlando Pirates' new-look team making a visit to Bloemfontein Celtic.
