World unites behind Springboks

The Springboks will be receiving support from way beyond the borders of South Africa when they tackle England in Saturday's Rugby World Cup final at Stade de France.

Indeed, it appears that it is a case of the world against England as critics from far and wide pan what some have termed England's "anti-rugby", and side with the Boks.

The view that the Boks have to strike a blow for the sake of rugby has gained the South African team some surprising supporters, among them critics who have slammed the Boks as being brutish in the past.

One such writer is Australian-based Spiro Zavos, a man who has never been a great friend of the South African style of play.

Now his determination to see England thwarted has seen him write that "the Boks must win for the sake of the game of rugby", ending his article with "C'mon the Boks!".

Another new recruit to the Bok cause is Chris Rattue, columnist at The New Zealand Herald in Auckland. Rattue has never been much of a fan of Bok rugby in the past, but now he is unashamedly pinning his colours to the Bok mast and saying, as the headline to his column put it, "Come on South Africa. Please, please, please".

Sterling Mortlock, the Wallaby captain, has labelled some of the criticism targeted at England as unjustified. However, he is in no doubt as to who the winner will be.

"England have picked up momentum and they have played some good rugby, but I cannot see past the Springboks.

They have shown some great footwork at the World Cup and I cannot see them being beaten by England," said Mortlock.

The Bok team will be named on Thursday, and only one change to the match 22 is anticipated. Bob Skinstad loses his place on the bench to Wikus van Heerden.

CJ van der Linde is now expected to start ahead of Jannie du Plessis after earlier in the week coach Jake White considered starting with du Plessis and using van der Linde as an impact player.

England have responded to the injury to Josh Lewsey by recalling Marc Cueto on the wing.
