Honolulu - Last year, 12-year-old Michelle Wie became the first female player, and the youngest, to qualify for the Manoa Cup, Hawaii's top amateur golf tournament.

This year, with two LPGA events under her belt, Wie is looking to win the tournament.

The seventh-grade student from Honolulu made more history Tuesday when she reached the second round.

She defeated 54-year-old Sam Oishi 4 and 2 in match play Tuesday at the Oahu Country Club. Wie consistently outdrove Oishi by 50 metres, but said her swing was "funky."

"My swing wasn't good today," Wie said. "My dad told me to straighten it out, not to move my head."

Wie took the lead on Oishi's double-bogey on the opening hole and was 1-up at the turn. She maintained the lead throughout the round.

"She's been doing all right," Oishi said. "But I ran out of energy."

First played in 1907, the Manoa Cup is the oldest continuous golf tournament in Hawaii. Wie was eliminated in the first round last year.

Wie played in the LPGA Tour's Asahi Ryokuken International last month in North Augusta, Georgia, but missed the cut with rounds of 81 and 75.

She also missed the cut in the LPGA's season-opening Takefuji Classic after becoming the youngest Monday qualifier in tour history. - Sapa-AP
