DURBAN - Executive Committee(Exco) members have asked for a detailed report on the state of libraries that fall under eThekwini in a bid to determine functional ones and those that have been closed.

The call was made during a meeting yesterday after a report was tabled requesting Exco’s approval for the extension of the lease for the Durban North Library.

DA Exco member Nicole Graham expressed her support for the extension of the lease.

She noted that while the libraries played an important role to city residents, there had been challenges experienced in some instances.

“Across the city some libraries have been closed because of a range of reasons. We need to have a conversation on the matter because we know that they are an unfunded mandate and with the city’s financial position at the moment, there are challenges,” said Graham.

Exco members agreed that such a report was important and called for its compilation.

“So it is quite clear that we need to get a report detailing how many libraries fall under the city, the number of those that are operational and those that have either been shut or are in the process of being shut,” said eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, who is also the Exco chairperson.

Following the approval by Exco, the report will be tabled at the next council meeting.
